- Who is Monkey D. Luffy?
- Monkey D. Luffy (Captain): The captain who ate the Gum-Gum Fruit and gained the body of rubber.
The character
The captain who ate the Gum-Gum Fruit and gained the body of rubber. His dream is the boldest in fiction: find the One Piece and become King of the Pirates. He does not want to rule — he wants to be the freest person on the sea.
Character development
From small-town boy with a borrowed straw hat to a captain the World Government lists as a top-tier threat. Every arc hardens the same lessons: trust the crew, own every promise, and never bow to a big name. Declaring war on the World Government to save one crew member marked him as dangerous; by the story's current era, the world counts him among the Four Emperors themselves.
Powers & abilities

The actor
Iñaki Godoy — as Monkey D. Luffy · Season 1 & 2.
Iñaki Godoy is a Mexican actor from Mexico City (born 2003) who jumped from Mexican television to a global lead before turning 20 — the LA Times devoted a profile to the leap "from telenovelas to Luffy." Streaming audiences first knew him from Netflix's ¿Quién mató a Sara? (Who Killed Sara?).

- One Piece (Netflix, 2023–)
- ¿Quién mató a Sara? (Netflix)
- Mexican television and film
The casting story
Godoy self-taped his audition while working on another project in Canada — and did not initially know it was for One Piece. Producers liked the tape but asked him to re-record with a note about Luffy's energy. Eventually the tape reached Eiichiro Oda himself — and Oda laughed. That laugh, Godoy later learned, is why he got the part. His casting was announced in late 2021 with Netflix's famous campaign promising filming would begin once the official account hit one million followers.

Why this casting works
Iñaki Godoy, a young Mexican actor, was cast in 2021 when Netflix announced the series to global disbelief — and won the internet over completely by premiere night. His Luffy works because he plays the seriousness of joy: a hero whose smile is a weapon. Few actors can be that uncool-cool; Godoy makes it look effortless.
The fan corner
The fandom's consensus is near-unanimous: "perfect casting." r/OnePiece threads celebrating Godoy routinely become love letters — serious counter-arguments essentially vanished after Season 1. A fan subculture has also formed around his press-tour energy; interview clips where he bounces between English and Spanish are among the most-shared One Piece content on social platforms.
