The actor
Mackenyu — as Roronoa Zoro · Season 1 & 2.
Mackenyu Maeda — known simply as Mackenyu — was born in 1996 and is the son of the late Sonny Chiba, one of the most influential martial-arts actors in cinema history (The Street Fighter, Kill Bill). He began Kyokushin karate at age eight, built his name across Japanese cinema — the Chihayafuru films made him a household name in Japan — and crossed into Hollywood with Pacific Rim: Uprising and Knights of the Zodiac. Of his craft he says: "Martial arts is part of the drama. It is performance."

The casting story
Netflix cast Mackenyu in the original 2021 main-announcement alongside Godoy and Rudd — the one name that made longtime fans exhale with relief, given his father's legacy and his own action résumé. For the role he reportedly trained seven days a week, around three hours a day, to build Zoro's physique; his personal trainer has spoken publicly about the regimen, and fan forums still litigate whether the result was natural (it was, per the trainer).

Why this casting works
Mackenyu is Japanese action royalty — the son of the legendary Sonny Chiba — and an international star of live-action adaptations long before Netflix came calling. Casting him was a bridge between the series' Japanese roots and its global future, and his physical, deadpan Zoro became an instant fan favorite.
The fan corner
The physique debate is a fandom sport — "natural or not?" threads recur constantly. The deeper fan take: Mackenyu's casting honors his father's legacy, and the community treats every new Zoro sword moment as a tribute to Sonny Chiba. The 2021 casting skeptics have gone notably quiet.
