New readers are always surprised by how rhythmic the biggest manga on earth actually is. Here is the machine behind the Sunday countdown on our homepage.

The weekly heartbeat

New chapters publish in Weekly Shonen Jump in Japan and land on official English platforms — Manga Plus and VIZ — on Sundays, typically at 8:00 a.m. Pacific / 15:00 UTC. Our countdown targets that official release time and nothing earlier.

Break weeks are normal

Eiichiro Oda takes scheduled breaks roughly every three to four weeks — for health, research trips (the man visits real-world locations for inspiration), and editorial planning. Break weeks are announced in advance in the official Jump schedule. When one lands, our countdown skips it automatically.

A break week means no chapter that Sunday — it does not mean the series is ending, delayed indefinitely, or in trouble. It means the creator gets a week off. After twenty-plus years of weekly output, earned.

From chapters to volumes

Weekly chapters are short. Roughly every three months, ten of them are collected into a tankobon volume with cover art, extras, and occasional corrections. Volumes are what you buy physically; chapters are what you read weekly. The volume count and chapter count never quite line up — that is normal.

The anime’s different clock

The anime adaptation runs on its own Saturday schedule with its own production breaks. That is why the manga and anime countdowns on this site are separate timers — they are separate productions.

Rule of thumb: Sundays for chapters, Saturdays for episodes, volumes when they ship, and break weeks when Jump says so. Everything else is rumor.
