How to cook like Sanji.
Jules is a One Piece fan we invited to cook five plates Sanji actually makes in the anime — grocery-store ingredients, home stove, real quantities. Watch the episode, then cook.

1. Seafood risotto — Gin's plate
Anime: Episode 21 — “Unwelcome Customer! Sanji's Food and Gin's Debt!” Baratie. Sanji feeds a starving Gin. Recaps call it seafood risotto (the official recipe book lists a fried-rice version). This is the risotto.
Serves 2–3 · about 40 minutes
Ingredients
- 1 cup (200 g) arborio rice
- 1 small onion, finely chopped · 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 tbsp olive oil · 2 tbsp butter
- ½ cup (120 ml) dry white wine
- 3½ cups (850 ml) warm fish or vegetable stock
- 250 g shrimp, peeled · 250 g mussels or clams, cleaned
- Handful parsley, chopped · zest and juice of ½ lemon · salt and pepper
Method
- Keep the stock hot in a small pan. Pat the seafood dry. Chop onion and garlic.
- In a wide pan, warm oil and 1 tbsp butter. Soften the onion 4 minutes, add garlic 30 seconds.
- Add the rice. Stir 2 minutes until the edges look translucent (toasting).
- Pour in the wine. Stir until it is absorbed.
- Add stock one ladle at a time, stirring often. Wait until each ladle is mostly gone before the next. This takes about 18 minutes.
- When the rice is almost tender, fold in shrimp and mussels. Cover 3–4 minutes until the shrimp are pink and the shells open. Discard any that stay shut.
- Take off the heat. Stir in remaining butter, lemon, parsley, salt, and pepper. Rest 1 minute. Serve immediately.

2. Baratie farewell soup
Anime: Episode 30 — “Departure! Sea Chef and Luffy Travel Together!” The kitchen tastes Sanji’s soup as he walks out with Luffy. They pretend it isn’t good. It is.
Serves 4 · about 50 minutes
Ingredients
- 1 onion · 2 carrots · 2 celery stalks, all chopped
- 2 tbsp olive oil · 2 garlic cloves · 1 bay leaf
- 1 tbsp tomato paste · 1 can (400 g) chopped tomatoes, optional for a redder broth
- 1.2 litres fish or chicken stock
- 300 g white fish or shrimp, cut in chunks
- Salt, pepper, parsley, lemon · bread to serve
Method
- Chop onion, carrot, and celery into even pieces.
- Warm oil in a pot. Cook the veg 8 minutes until soft. Add garlic and tomato paste 1 minute.
- Add tomatoes if using, then stock and bay. Bring to a simmer. Cook 25–30 minutes.
- Season. Add fish or shrimp. Simmer 4–5 minutes until just cooked. Do not boil hard.
- Finish with parsley, a squeeze of lemon, and a little olive oil. Serve with bread.

3. Whole Cake bento
Anime: episodes 825–828, Whole Cake Island. Sanji packs a bento packed with the crew’s favorites while Luffy waits. At home: one careful box, not five menus.
Makes 1 bento · about 45 minutes
Ingredients
- 1 cup cooked Japanese short-grain rice, warm
- 2 eggs · 1 tsp soy sauce · 1 tsp sugar · 1 tsp oil (tamagoyaki)
- 1 chicken thigh or 1 salmon fillet · salt, pepper
- ½ cucumber · 1 tsp rice vinegar · pinch of salt and sugar (quick pickle)
- A few greens or cherry tomatoes · optional nori
Method
- Cook the rice. Keep it warm, covered.
- Beat eggs with soy and sugar. Heat a small pan with oil. Pour a thin layer, roll, pour more, roll again until you have a log. Rest, slice.
- Season chicken or salmon. Pan-fry 4–6 minutes a side until cooked. Slice.
- Slice cucumber thin. Toss with vinegar, salt, sugar. Sit 10 minutes.
- Pack rice first while it is warm. Tuck egg, meat, pickle, and greens into the gaps. Sauce on the side, not over the rice.

4. Wedding cake (home size)
Anime: Episode 852 — “Fierce Battle Begins! Luffy vs. Katakuri!” Sanji builds a cake to stop Big Mom. On screen: milk, beet sugar, black sesame, kinako, yogurt. At home: one 8-inch strawberry cream cake. Optional sesame dust as a nod.
Serves 8–10 · about 90 minutes plus cooling
Ingredients
- 4 eggs · 150 g sugar · 150 g plain flour · 50 g melted butter · 1 tsp vanilla
- 400 ml cold whipping cream · 80 g yogurt · 2 tbsp sugar
- 400 g strawberries, hulled and sliced · optional 1 tsp toasted black sesame
Method
- Heat oven to 170°C (340°F). Grease and line two 20 cm (8-inch) tins.
- Beat eggs and sugar until thick and pale, 4–5 minutes. Fold in flour, then butter and vanilla.
- Split between tins. Bake 18–22 minutes until a skewer comes out clean. Cool in tins 10 minutes, then on a rack until fully cold.
- Whip cream with yogurt and 2 tbsp sugar to soft peaks.
- Sandwich the layers with cream and strawberries. Cover the outside. Top with more fruit. Dust sesame if you want. Chill 30 minutes before cutting.

5. Sanji’s special soba — Wano
Anime: Episode 920 — “A Great Sensation! Sanji's Special Soba!” Flower Capital stall. Jules cooks kake soba (hot broth) at home.
Serves 2 · about 20 minutes
Ingredients
- 200 g dried soba noodles
- 400 ml dashi (or 400 ml water + 1 tsp dashi powder)
- 3 tbsp soy sauce · 2 tbsp mirin · 1 tsp sugar
- 2 green onions, sliced · optional nori and wasabi
Method
- Bring a large pot of unsalted water to a boil. Cook soba per packet, usually 4–5 minutes, until just tender.
- Drain. For a cleaner bowl, rinse briefly under hot water and drain well. (For cold zaaru, rinse under cold water instead.)
- In a small pan, heat dashi, soy, mirin, and sugar. Do not boil hard. Taste; add a splash of soy if you want it saltier.
- Divide noodles into two bowls. Pour hot broth over. Top with green onion, nori, wasabi. Serve immediately.

The blonde wig
For one shot Jules put on a cheap Sanji wig — curly blonde, one eye covered. Small cosplay, same kitchen.
